What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is a system of medicine that has flourished in China for over 2,500 years. It is widely used throughout Europe, Asia and America. This system of medicine has seen rapid acceptance and growth among researchers and western and oriental practitioners who have integrated it into their health care. As more of the public experiences the benefits of this type of medicine, it will continue to grow in acceptance and use.

What is the practice of acupuncture? Acupuncture i s primarily based on discerning a “pattern of disharmony” and treating it accordingly. Whether we use physical therapies and/or equipment, herbal medicines, moxabustion (heat therapy), nutrition or suggested lifestyle changes - each is used to address specific needs a person may have

What purpose does Acupuncture have? Acupuncture strengthens  the physical body, prevents disease, controls pain and promotes longevity. The purpose and goal of acupuncture is not limited to eliminating or alleviating symptoms. Our ultimate goal is to increase a person’s ability to function and maximize their quality of life

How does Acupuncture Work? Acupuncture therapy succeeds because of the use of natural laws and energetics coupled with the application of needles to specific “points” on the body. These “points” are grouped along specific pathways or meridians that cross the body. When the flow of energy is absent, deficient, interrupted, excessive or blocked in a specific area, good health can be interrupted, resulting in illness or pain. Acupuncture allows energy to flow freely through the pathways or meridians. By the the appropriate acupuncture “points” along these meridians, energy is released and regulated. The result ? An individual’s health is gradually restored and maintained.

What does Acupuncture do? Studies indicate that acupuncture influences the central and peripheral nervous system. Evidence shows that it releases endorphins from the brain - which makes acupuncture particularly effective in pain control.

Acupuncture can effect changes in the sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It can promote better functioning of the gastrointestinal system and the activity of the endocrine system.

Acupuncture also works with the body to harmonize and balance the energy levels. It improves circulation and allows the body to heal itself more quickly and more completely.

What should you expect during treatment? Most patients find the experience very relaxing. They experience a sense of well-being and are surprised at how comfortable and unintrusive the placement of the needles can be. Many fall asleep during a treatment.

Occasionally, a patient might feel a slight sensation upon entry of the needle. Some have felt a slight pressure or a “dull” or “surging” reaction when the needle reaches the “Qi” or correct “point”.

You can rest assured that these needles are nothing like the hypodermic needles used for injections. These “thread-like” needles have been specially designed to provide for a virtually pain-free experience.

Is Acupuncture safe? One of the tremendous advantages of acupuncture is the absence of any serious side effects. These needles generally cause no bleeding upon entry or removal and are discarded after each use.

What if you absolutely hate needles? There are several alternatives to needle treatment for those who prefer not to be “needled”. A process called “point activation” can be used. This procedure uses micro-current and heat as an alternative and works almost as effectively as acupuncture.

How many treatments are necessary? Each person’s needs are unique and a treatment plan is designed specifically to meet those needs. No two people respond the same way to a particular modality.

Length of treatment depends on the type, duration, severity of condition and physical state of the patient at the time of treatment.

Because acupuncture works on a cumula-tive basis, a typical course of treatment ranges between four to six visits. When these are completed, an evaluation is done to determine if any more treatments are necessary.

However, for acupuncture to be most effective, at least two to three consecutive treatments a week are necessary. As results are achieved, the interval between treatments can be lengthened.

Once a patient’s health is restored, they return every three months for “tune-ups” to maintain optimum health.
